Formula, Fevers, and Finally Some Fun

Last night was another long one for Miss Addie. She developed a fever and was quite uncomfortable. The formula still isn't agreeing with her stomach, yet she's hungry and cries for more. We did get confirmation that Addie was being fed the Sanlu tainted formula, but not to worry if she is showing no symptoms of kidney problems. Yeah right- not worry. There are many wonderful things about this country, but I will feel so much better when we get home and have access to the medical care and concern to which we are are accustomed. The formula situation is sad, in that the majority of children using this brand were those in orphanages and the very, very poor as it is much cheaper than other more reputable brands.

At breakfsat this morning Addie refused to eat. In fact she truly is not very interested in any solid foods. She did enjoy banging her stacking toys on the high chair, and she loves to throw the napkins and placemats on the floor. I cannnot wait to see her at Nannie's kitchen table. Maybe by then she'll be interested in solid foods, after all who could not enjoy a good vegetable soup or some mashed potato. Bayley and I would welcome some right about now. We ordered from the restaurant in the hotel this evening and thought of Tommy when reading the selections. Some choices were: Deep Fried Pig Intestine With Green Tea, Sauteed White Fungus with Vegetable Stems, or Braised Shredded Eel with Garlic Sauce. We opted for some delicious Fried Rice.

Bayley got her wish this afternoon, and we took Addie to the pool as she seemed in good spirits. At first she was very scared, but by the time we were getting ready to leave she was enjoying herself. She loved to kick her legs, and it seemed like great exercise for her muscles. Speaking of exercise, we have a great view of the local middle school out our hotel window, and each day they have Phys. Ed at the same time. Take a look at the pictures of what we think could be the biggest P.E. class ever.

Throughout the day we have seen a variety of new behaviors from Addie. She loves to pull sister's hair, and she is making many new sounds and squeals. Now she reaches out her arms to us if we walk by while she is sitting on the floor. We think she may actually really like us now. She may have been born in the Year of the Rat, but we think she would make a terrific owl. Her head is on a constant swivel, as she is so curious about everything going on around her. We cannot say enough about how much we appreciate the comments people send to us on our blog. We are very homesick now and hearing from family and friends makes us feel better.

Goodness gracious, we can't wait for you to get back here where we can offer better milks and food. Sounds like she's getting the love stuff from you guys.Taking care of someone when they are sick is an experience. Think of it like this...it is helping Addie to know you will help her through things...it's so good to hear she bounced back and got in the pool....quite brave of her...Bay as always you are a wonderful helper to mom...keep up the good work...Jo-Jo has alot of ghost stories to tell on the way to get ice cream each night and one of them is about a cat that crosses a bridge to the sister's bedroom and then goes to the "Mulky Way" everytime I try to correct it to "Milky Way" he gets impatient with me and reminds me it is his story and he is telling it his way! You will be back in no time..hang in there..kisses to Addie and all. Love,Mom and Dad.

So I've been awake since about 4:30AM with my computer on waiting for your new post. This is becoming quite an exciting habit of mine, but I'm quite ready for you to be across the bay!

Addie looks different already........so engaged and loved! Bayley, you are the best big sister in the whole world.

Yuk on the menu selections. I think I would have gone with the rice as well. I agree that it will be fun to see Addie at Aunt Winnie's table. I know Aunt Win is very excited about that as well. Something about that table........everything just tastes better!

So glad to read that you guys had some fun, and Addie's fever didn't last long. I hope her body adjusts to the formula in the next day or so!

On another note, enjoy the heat. It's 33 degrees here this morning!

Love and miss you!
Nick, Todd, Brynn and Myah

PS - Bay i really miss you but I love the pictures of Addie you sent me!I can't wait to see my new cousin at home.
Love you, Brynn

Once you get back I am not sure what I will do in the morning! I am like Nicki looking for updates before school now. I really wish you could post twice a day as I would like new pictures before bedtime (just joking with you). Addie may feel sick but she looks as cute as could be. Don't worry she will be eating soon and I am sure that Nannie will cook her up some veggie soup. If she is anything like the rest of your kids she will be sitting behind Nannie's table in no time at all.

Only a week left!

Love the bow in her hair - so cute. I was just saying to The Boss that I wish I'd thought to bring hair stuff. We can't get her to keep on her sun hat (not that one needs sun hats in Xian!) but it would be fun to try bows.

We are sorry about the formula - will be praying divine protection over her kidneys!

We have the day "off" tomorrow, so we're heading to the pool again. The Boss took his girl on her first date to Starbucks while I caught up on email and read some of my book. He's enjoying the attention he gets when he's gooing and gaaaing over her :)

Only three days till the White Swan :) Dinner at Lucys? Make mine a big burger. The real kind :)

I think you will see improvements every day in Addie as she becomes more familiar and comfortable with you. That already seems to be the case.

I'm glad that you are able to find some fun things to do with her. Just think how much better it will be when you are at home! Bayley is proving to be a wonderful big sister to Addie. Since I have such a special bond with my sisters, I know how important this is.

Keep checking those days off your calendar...you'll be back before you know it. We all can't wait to see Addie in person. The pictures are wonderful though!

Love, Dawn

oh I love the menu.....I can remember being in China wanting a Garden Salad so bad!!! LOL.....

No worries, that precious baby looks fine to us......our Emily won't drink milk unless we flavor it.....I remember in China we used to take the vanilla yogurt on the breakfast bar and mix it with rice....Emily would eat the whole bowl..................

Addie just cuter and cuter with each post!! The anticipation is driving us all crazy. I think that Elizabeth is bringing Abigail to school today so that we can all make a big fuss over her...Addie's turn is next!! So happy to hear that she is reaching out to you both and feeling loved, I figured it wouldn't take her too long to sense the affection that you both have for her. Your family is such a loving, nurturing bunch that she will never again be lacking for attention, love, hugs or kisses!! Can't wait to see you--the countdown is really on now...this is the last Friday you will be away...

Love, Mary

Addie seems to be adjusting well to your family. I hope the fever was just a fluke. I read a story on MSN today about the tainted baby formula (almost all dairy products may have been tainted). Unexplained fevers and dark urine are signs that there may be reason to be concerned. I pray that Addie is healthy and begins eating more.

Thanks for letting me tag along on your journey, it gives me a glimmer of hope that I'll be on that journey someday.

The pictures of Addie you posted with this blog are absolutely ADORABLE! It is evident she is becoming happier with each passing day! Tom and I went swimming yesterday and were preparing for him to have a great day at school today so that we can have a camp-out tonight! Venison is on our menu tonight, a little better than your choices but not by much if you ask me! We love and miss you all! Only 6 more days!

Nana is checking in one more time. I like the idea of mixing the yougurt with rice if you can. Also if you had to flavor up the american formula for a few days it would'nt be the worst thing. When you all get to Bejing again I'll bet the food offerings will be more suitable.Hope the fever is gone today! A Ray-Smith kid for sure. In the water in no time.Of course all aunts and grandmother types back her at home wonder about clean water and all that stuff..we will just have to cope for another week and then check you all out when you are finally home...so many people have connected and told us how they like to follow the story and Addie's progress.....about that hair bow!! Was that Bayley's idea? Love to all , Nana

Addie, I am really happy to see you and I know your favorite toy is the remote control. You like to kick Mommy's chin when she is trying to feed you. Anyways, you are sooooo funny! I had the best Friday so far in school today and I am going to eat deer meat for supper. I am excited for you to try it when you get home. Tomorrow we are going to pick some apples and make t-shirts and signs for when you come home. We are also going to China Hill to celebrate you!
Very Truly Yours,

I showed pictures of Addie and shared the blog with Grampie Smith. We are all excited about her coming home. Not sure when we will be able to see her since our schedules are crazy this next month. But if there is a little delay she may get used to American living before she meets the crazy cousins from Brunswick - Love you and can't wait to see Addie
