We're In Guangzhou And Getting Closer To Home

Today has been a very busy day. We left Nanchang early this morning and flew to Guangzhou where the final portions of our paperwork will be completed. Addie was great on the airplane, but then again that was only 90 minutes. Let's hope we can just manage on the big fifteen hour flight from Hong Kong to Newark, then the eight hour layover before the final flight to Maine. On the plane she ate quite a few cookies, so I can clearly see that snacks will be a top priority in packing the carry on for home.

Bayley absolutely loves the White Swan Hotel. The pools are gorgeous, and the lobby is filled with ponds of large goldfish and a huge waterfall. Here there are tons of families finalizing adoptions. Walking around Shaiman Island where we are located feels incredibly safe.

Right after our arrival in Guangzhou we had to hustle to get Addie to her adoption medical exam. She was very sleepy as she had missed her nap, but it went very well. Three doctors felt that her reflexes had greatly improved since the last medical reports, and that her muscle tone and weakness were more a matter a neglect. With lots of attention and physical therapy they predicted that things would go very well. Her hearing tests and the exam indicated she is plugged with wax, but they said they didn't have the tools required to remove it, so I should get that seen to when we arrive home.

This evening we went to the large playroom here at the White Swan. Addie was scared of the toys, but at the same time very interested. She also seemed timid around other children. She is absolutely suspicious of balls, and she squints her eyes when a ball rolls by. Bayley and I were so surprised when once while standing at a table with blocks she completely let go and stood alone for perhaps 10 seconds. As you can imagine we cannot wait to get home, but things are more comfortable here. Hugs and big kisses to the boys.

Closer by the minute! Can't wait. Sounds like Addie is coming around. Sure she seems suspicious of different things. If you have never seen and experienced many things (wonderful or not) it must be scary...she has to wonder will it end? who are these caretakers? will they leave me? Where are my cookies!! So glad to hear it feels safer there. Talked to Ron a minute ago and the boys enjoyed the fair. Off to school, Tom is doing well and Jo-Jo is a being a big boy!! Pack those snacks for the long trip. Love Mom.

Your mom's comment cracked me up! She must be a good grandma to be able to get into a kid's head like that :) Too cute.

Glad to hear the exam went well - I just am so thrilled for you all and for little Addie. She's got a really sweet look in her eyes these last couple posts - more connected and interested and alive! It must be all that good lovin' and praying of her new family here and home.

Did you ever connect with LH about the flight? I wish we lived closer to the Newark airport, I'd take ya home with us for a real meal and a nap!

Hey Britt, Bayley & Addie,

The end is in sight!! Enjoy all that American food. It is so good to see Addie playing with toys and being so interactive with you both. She will just keep improving emotionally and physically with all the love and support that she is receiving from you guys. She definately will not know what to think when she comes home and has so many more people paying special attention to her and her needs! Can't wait to talk to you this weekend.

Love,
Mary

Hi Brittany and Bayley
Gay just shared this web site with me. WOW what an incredible journey you have had with Addie and thank you so much for sharing it with everyone. Addie is such a beautiful little girl. As the parent of an adoptive child I can share and feel with you how rewarding it is. You also realize that many of the child's delays are from neglect and with support and encouragement those skills will develop. Congratulations and I can not wait to meet her.

Today Mary told me about your daily blogs, so I spent last evening catching up on the progress of your trip. Brittany, this is another of your amazingly creative ideas, one Addie will always cherish when she is old enough to search for her roots. Now your family has a beautiful, alert little daughter who will definitely turn heads when in public! It is amazing how the Lord has such perfect timing. You had told me you were not going to China until October and the next thing I knew – you were on your way to fulfill your long awaited dream. A week later and Addie may have been one of the very ill children in China. Your timely arrival perhaps actually saved her life. Britt, I see you are teaching Addie the skill of cleaning between her front teeth, one she will need when she has very sugary tea parties with you! (Also, I’m proud of your allegiance to the food borne illness training from Tasty Lit.) Now, thanks to the selfless commitment of three wonderful families, our communities and schools will be blessed with regular visits from three China dolls. We will be praying for your soon safe return. Love to the three of you.

be careful when you get to Walmart. Emily saw a singing bear and went into hysterics...it was awful, I had to leave the store......she loves the stores now, but it took a while!!!
